We will be starting our year off with a unit on reading, understanding, making and following maps! Being a hybrid Montessori classroom, it’s all about how to make this a hands-on experience. We are starting out with an exploration of this topographical map of Yellowstone, and comparing it to a virtual Yellowstone tour. Later on, we are going geocaching as well as following coordinates to dig sites for fossil digging!
Ahhh! Fractions!! Year after year, this word incites fear in the children of my classroom. It takes some work to undo that ingrained “Fraction Fear.” Fun activities, such as this one, are ways that we do just that. I use this as a review activity for my older students, which then turns into a mentoring opportunity with my younger students.
